Why HEALTH ACCESS CONNECT

Long distances and high transportation costs to the nearest health facility lead to higher rates of preventable illnesses and death among vulnerable men, women, and children in remote areas.

HAC utilizes motorcycle taxis to transport health workers and medicines to remote communities for monthly one-day outreach clinics.

At the outreach clinics, the health services provided include antiretroviral therapy, family planning, immunizations, maternal health services, and others.

pROBLEM.SOLUTION
  •  Residents in remote villages face difficulty accessing free health services from the nearest health facility due to long distance and unaffordable transport costs.

    • Set up monthly or bi-monthly outreach clinics in remote communities
  • Transportation costs of health workers and healthcare resources to remote villages are cost-prohibitive and dependent on short-term grants.

    • Engage the community residents in a  contribution system ($0.55 per patient) to cover the transportation costs of the health workers supporting outreach clinics.
  • Workers at health facilities do not have reliable means to transportation to remote villages. Vehicle grants are expensive and fall into disrepair

    • Micro-finance locally appropriate means of transportation (Motorcycles) to local entrepreneurs with the provision of reliable transportation to health workers supporting outreach clinics as a condition to the loan.

Our model involves partnering with District Health Offices, Government Health Facilities and Community Health workers, also known Village Health Teams to set up sustainable grassroot outreaches

How does the Motorcycle Micro-finance work?

  • OPPORTUNITY

Motorcycles in Uganda are a great way to earn an income and they reach every corner of the country. Though they are expensive and unaffordable for our target beneficiaries. So HAC fills the gap.

  • THE PURCHASE

We purchase motorcycles and sell them on a loan of $1,400 to an experienced motorcycle rider. Each rider is required to pay back the loan on a weekly basis with $20 per week at a 15% annual interest rate.

  • BENEFIT

After 18-24 months, the rider will have paid off the loan and they will receive 15% of the loan amount in the form of savings to support them in future investments.
