In the Islands of Kalangala (Ssese) in Uganda, where access to healthcare and health education is a mystery, there exists a beacon of hope named Josephine Nalunga. She isn’t just your average community health worker (CHW), but a shining example of dedication, compassion, and resilience. Josephine’s unwavering commitment to improving the health and well-being of her community has not only earned her respect but also the prestigious title of the Best CHW of the Year 2023.
Josephine’s journey to becoming an exceptional CHW is nothing short of inspiring and she reflects on her journey with immense pride.
“I didnt go to school but through the trainings I have received from Health Access Connect, I can now administer Short family planning Methods and very many women have embraced family and the HAC team is very support whenever I seek for help.”
Josephine proudly says.
Josephine has been a CHW for over 10 years and has worked with HAC for over 3 years. Through this journey, what she has learnt has turned into her strength. One of Josephine’s greatest strengths lies in her ability to connect with her clients on a personal level. Instead of merely viewing them as patients, she treats them as friends and confidants.
“I make them my friends and they talk to me freely”
she said with a smile.
This commitment to excellence ensures that communities not only receive healthcare services but also have a supportive environment that encourages them to come for the services comfortably. This approach fosters trust and creates a safe space for individuals to discuss sensitive issues concerning family planning.
Family planning is an essential aspect of public health, yet it remains a taboo subject in many communities. Recognizing this challenge, Josephine took it upon herself to break down barriers and initiate conversations about reproductive health. Through her efforts, she has empowered countless individuals to make informed decisions about their futures.
But Josephine’s impact extends far beyond the confines of her village. She regularly conducts home visits, ensuring that no one is left behind in receiving family planning services. Moreover, she goes above and beyond by venturing to remote islands and landing sites to reach marginalized populations. Her willingness to traverse difficult terrain and face daunting challenges exemplifies her unwavering dedication to her community’s well-being.
What truly sets Josephine apart is her willingness to adapt and learn. Despite not having a formal medical background, she has undergone training to administer contraceptive methods like Sayana press and Depo provera. This knowledge has equipped her with the tools necessary to provide comprehensive care to her clients, further solidifying her role as a trusted healthcare provider.
Of course, Josephine’s success wouldn’t be possible without the support of her peers, the Health Access Connect (HAC) Family planning team and the bergstrom Foundation. Their guidance, encouragement, and resources have been instrumental in amplifying Josephine’s impact and ensuring the sustainability of her efforts.
In celebrating Josephine’s accomplishments, we are reminded that true heroes don’t always wear capes; sometimes, they wear a simple uniform and carry a heart full of compassion. Josephine’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for CHWs around the world, proving that with determination and empathy, anything is possible.
